Employees Are NOT Your Family: Culture Building Tactics

Running a business with a family-like approach may seem ideal for maintaining good relationships with employees, but a the approach I prefer is running it like a professional sports team. This approach provides increased accountability for employees and ensures that the business is run in the most efficient manner possible.

This is better for everyone on the team and at the end of the day, your business. It will present challenges such as balancing the team mentality with individual incentives and maintaining employee morale while prioritizing results, but it's all worth it when you've built your dream team. It takes a certain individual to work in a “dream-team” environment, some people will opt-in and others will opt-out, and that's okay.

What you'll hear in this episode:

[1:53] Why running a business like a family doesn't work

[3:39] Embodying a team as opposed to a family and how it allows you to coach people

[7:28] Netflix's culture, and how they're doing things the right way

[9:45] Tips for strengthening your dream team and achieving your goals

Jackie Koch

Hey, I’m Jackie Koch. I have over 15 years of experience prospecting talent and building teams for Fortune 500 companies, startups and small businesses in all types of industries.  Technically, I have an MBA from Concordia University, although I’d argue I learned more about growing and scaling a modern business over the last 5 years in the LA tech start up scene. There I built out recruiting and People Operations teams for high growth tech start ups. I love entrepreneurs and being one at heart, I started my own business during the pandemic. I’m the founder and CEO of People Principles where I help founders scale through fractional recruiting and people operations services.
